Overall and SK develop an innovative cash-free print and copy service

14 September 2006

From the beginning of September 2006 the students of Tartu University, that is the largest university in Estonia, are able to purchase an ID-ticket from their mobile phones of any local operator, to pay for printing, scanning and copying services. This is the first time when Estonia's innovative ID-ticket solution is implemented in a field other than public transportation, for which it was originally developed.

"ID-ticket is the most simple and secure way to enable convenient payment for various services in the retail market, including transportation, admission fees etc," says Märt Randoja, a systems manager for ID-ticket and Mobile-payment in SK (Certification Center). "I am delighted that after two and a half years of successful usage in the public transport system, the ID-ticket is broadening its applications also in other fields."

"So far the print and copy solutions we have provided always require an operator-cashier attending to the device. The "cash-free" payments by ID-ticket makes it possible for mobilephone owners to use our services anywhere and any time, without the necessity for an operator-cashier," says Märt Haamer, CEO of Overall Eesti Ltd. "The system can accept an Estonian ID-card, ISIC student card or any other card with a magstripe or a chip for user authentication."

"Every day the 13 000 students and staff of Tartu University print, scan and copy thousands of pages. Cash-free mobile-payment system makes the service more accessible to users. We hope that the students will quickly adopt it," said Olav Kiis, Head of Tartu University’s IT Department.

"Our goal is to offer similar ID-ticket based printing solutions also in other universities, schools, libraries and similar public environments. Already we are preparing to launch the mobile-payment system in other Estonian universities," adds Märt Haamer.

ID-ticket
ID-tickets were first introduced in Tartu’s public transportation in January 2004. Today, over 110 000 people are using the ID-ticket daily (in Tallinn, Tartu and Harjumaa). Last year altogether about 1 million ID-tickets were sold. ID-tickets are an innovative personalized and counterfeit-proof solution, enabling the user to pay for the service through several convenient electronic channels, including m-banking or e-banking.
