1-day Workshop 10 October 2013 10:00-18:00

“Story is King” – this is Philip’s philosophy that will also be at the heart of his Tallinn events. A wide range of topics will be covered, all focused on helping you tell a story in a more visual and individual way. Practical demonstrations on shooting interviews, harnessing natural light and how to use it to your advantage. Using gear in a way that will enhance your storytelling and also seeing through the hype to determine when additional gear can help or possibly hinder your production.

Sometimes the simplest techniques can give you beautiful visuals. Lens whacking, sliders, jibs, high speed, these are just some of the practical techniques to be covered which could be used to enhance your productions. Philip will be sharing his thought process as he works through a shoot in front of the students with a very tight deadline which will then be shown to the class after a very quick edit.

The format is very flexible and with audience interaction the day goes into fascinating and unique directions, unexpected areas are explored and discussion based sections both fascinate and entertain. The 1-day workshop is with a larger group and although there are live demonstrations, there is no time for students to do an actual shoot. That is where the 2-day Masterclass comes in.

The value of the One Day Workshop cannot be overstated. It is essential that you understand, this is not information that can be absorbed from the internet. Technical specs, camera reviews and “how to” videos can all be found online but what you will come away from these workshops with is a renewed enthusiasm and a desire to push yourself further than you ever thought was possible!

2-day Masterclass 12-13 October 2013 10:00-18:00

The Two Day workshop is a much smaller group with a more individual focus on each attendee. Story is still at the core of the workshop and we will also explore the art of looking at things differently. After some brief introductions and new techniques, all students will be challenged to shoot a 30 seconds short film in a limited amount of time under the guidance of Philip and his team. The topic is not revealed until just before the timer starts! Whether experienced or relatively new to filming, this exercise has proven to be enormously challenging but incredibly fulfilling to all who have participated.

As in his own every day work, Philip will explain why it is so important to remove yourself from your comfort zone, this will be a unique experience for each and every student. With Philip on hand to give help and throw ideas at you, you will be asked to edit the piece over night (yes, homework!) and come back the following day for screenings and feedback on your work.

Following the student analysis on Day Two we will cover ways to enhance your stories and make them more visually compelling through technique, lighting and equipment. We will also look at enhancing your approach to shooting interviews. Two days of creativity and filming designed to pull you out of your comfort zone!

You will come away from these workshops with a renewed enthusiasm and a desire to push yourself further than you ever thought was possible.
